Because the frontline workers at existing county and community agencies are skilled at recognizing women with true needs, the High Country Women's Fund partners with them to distribute its funds more effectively to those who need it most. In some cases HCWF is able to fill gaps in agency funding to ensure women can take advantage of agency programs and opportunities.

  • Appalachian District Health Department social workers identify the needs of pregnant women and new mothers in our county. The HCWF supports the Maternal Health Program by providing funds to enable mothers to make it through maternity leave and return to work, provide transportation in critical situations, and to help them resume or start their education. Last year 24 women benefited from our funding and many received diapers and formula donated by our members on an individual basis.
  • The Children's Council works to promote the future health of children and the success of their parents in the first five years of the child's life. The HCWF pays for childcare so that teenage mothers can attend the GED class at the Council. Student moms credit this childcare as the biggest factor in their ability to complete this program.
  • Community Care Clinic provides health care to those in our community who do not have health insurance. HCWF provided funding to begin CCC's new program, Making Smiles. Its goal is to link 75 female patients with oral health care through a local dentist.
  • Hospitality House is Boone's community homeless shelter. A grant from the HCWF built a women's dorm in the new shelter and provides for the special needs of women and children which cannot be covered by the Hospitality House, including tuition for women returning to school, uniforms and work clothes, daycare expenses, and summer camp for children.
  • Mountain Alliance is a community of individuals who provide Watauga County high school youth with opportunities to explore and develop their leadership potential through experiential learning. A grant from HCWF helps provide opportunities for teenage girls to experience leadership situations, push past perceived limitations, and enjoy all-female adventures in a supportive environment.
  • OASIS works tirelessly to end the cycle of domestic violence in Watauga County. The HCWF helps to fund the Transitional Housing Program that allows women and children to transition to a life free from abuse, to progress in their emotional healing, and to learn life skills for self-sufficiency.
  • W.A.M.Y. mission is to promote individual and family self-sufficiency in order to alleviate poverty at the root level and to enhance the quality of life for the residents of Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey counties. The HCWF supports W.A.M.Y.'s by funding the enhancement of supportive services for participants and providing one-time emergency assistance for the families of women who are not actively participating in W.A.M.Y. programs.
